When was Football's "Greatest Age"?

I was 11 when I first saw Zinedine Zidane.

That summer I watched as many World Cup games as I could on my Dad's tiny black and white TV. I would stand inches away from the screen because it was so grainy and I'd have to adjust and re-adjust the rabbit ears. I remember watching this bald guy in a baggy adidas shirt humiliate all of Brazil. I was young, but not too young to understand that he was different. The ball was different when he was around. He commanded. Somehow I just knew he was the best on earth.

By that time in my life, I'd seen Nolan Ryan pitch live. I'd seen Wayne Gretzky score a hat trick in a game 7. The summer before I saw Michael Jordan destroy the Jazz while suffering from the flu. I had seen greatness before.

Zidane was more.

I was just a little too young to "get" the World Cup of '94. But that summer in '98, Zidane helped me "get it". He converted me from a kid who played for fun on Saturdays to a lifetime disciple of the game.

Throughout the history of Football, many players have been considered "the Greatest on earth." Zidane was the first that I saw, but there were many others before, just as there will be many "Greats" to come. What I wanna know, is when Football itself was "the Greatest on earth." I'm not asking about individual players, but rather Football as a whole. Since it's inception, which generation of fans have been the most blessed? When did the world experience it's 'Greatest Age?'

Let's find out.

I believe it is strongly related to the Greatest Rivalries and the Greatest Players, so let's define it:

Greatest Leagues + Greatest Rivalries + Greatest Players + Highest Stage = 'Greatest Age'

A dynasty won't fit the bill. The world isn't the fan of the same team. We are looking for parity. Also, as crazy as the fans make the rivalry, that doesn't necessarily make the Football Great.

The best way to do this is to determine the following;
1.) Which leagues are the most competitive, and what are their greatest rivalries?
2.) Who were the greatest players, and how did their careers overlap?

Most Competitive Leagues and their greatest rivalries:

English Premiere League - Liverpool & Manchester United

Spanish La Liga - Real Madrid & Barcelona

Italian Serie A - Milan & Inter & Juventus

Greatest Players and the club(s) they contribute most to:

1."Pelé"                  (Brazil)       Santos 1956-74

This list comes from IFFHS and represents the "World Player of the Century." Unfortunately this leaves out many players who reached their Greatness after the year 2000, so here is a shortlist of those players who will have retired after the year 2000.

(In no particular order)
-Zidane                 Juventus 1996-2001, Real Madrid 2001-2006

-Maradona, Puskas, Platini, Charlton, Best, Schiaffino, Didi, Rivera, Meazza

Which leaves us with:
Cruyff vs. Di Stefano - 1 season (FCB/RM) Real Madrid didn't finish in top 3 of La Liga.               Out.
Zidane vs. Messi - 2 seasons (RM/FCB) Messi wasn't a starter.                                                 Out.
Messi vs. Ronaldo - 3 seasons (FCB/RM) Messi wasn't a starter.                                               Out.

Here are the 3 surviving candidates for "Greatest Age"

-Germany beat the Netherlands in the 1990 World Cup Group of 16 as they went on to win the Final.

Zinedine Zidane vs. Ronaldo / Juventus vs Inter / France vs Brazil

Summary:

Johan
While Pele, Cruyff, Maradona, Platini, etc. could be thought of as "better" than some of the players left on our list, these guys didn't play against each other! Their careers were spread out over time and geography. Many of them didn't even play in the most competitive leagues, like Pele, Beckenbauer, Garrincha, Eusebio, etc. so they never played against the most competitive teams of all time. They are all easily considered "Greats" but their paths never crossed, and therefore never contributed to the "Greatest Age of Football" we are searching for.

Of the 3 surviving candidates for "Greatest Age," it is a very close race. I honestly don't believe we can reach an objective conclusion for which was the "Greatest." My biased opinion is that the Football of TODAY is the "Greatest Age" and here's why:

Diego
-The Van Basten, Gullit / Matthaus saga was wrongly overshadowed by the Maradona / Matthaus rivalry due to the fact that Germany and Argentina traded punches in consecutive World Cup Finals. Maradona and Matthaus never met at the domestic club level. Also there was never talk about if any of these guys were the "Greatest of All Time."The names involved were big, but just not big enough.

-Zidane was always superior to Ronaldo. Both were "Greats" but Ronaldo couldn't keep up in matches vs Zidane. There was never any parity in this relationship. Not to mention in 2002 Ronaldo would become teammates with Zidane at Real Madrid!

-There has been a global shift of focus and importance from the
International level to the Club level in the past years. The best Club teams are almost always better than the best International teams. Club competition is also annual, being more frequent than the 4 year International Tournaments. Because of this, International rivalries aren't as healthy as Club rivalries.

Franz
-The Messi vs Ronaldo story isn't overshadowed by anything in Football. Parity exists between the 2 clubs.  They are always on the shortlists for Ballon d'Or, UEFA Best Player in Europe, and Best  Player in La Liga. Both are Captains for their International squads. Both play for the best 2 teams in all of Club Football right now, and both are the best player of these teams. Barcelona and Real Madrid are part of the Greatest Rivalry in Club Football. Nothing compares to El Clasico. They are both young and yet are already in the conversation for "Greatest Player", "Greatest Team", and "Greatest Rivalry" of all time.  Such polarity in Football hasn't been known. They split the world in 2. When I watch El Clasico I get the feeling that the Supreme Football Creator looks down and says, "They are getting it." At no other time in the history of Football have 2 such high caliber players and teams ever been pitted against each other so frequently, and at such high club stages. Although there is not much International rivalry to speak of between Messi and Ronaldo, it will come. I will give the edge in that category to the big names of Zidane and Ronaldo and the year 1998.

-Final Thoughts:

"The Greatest Age" is impossible to quantify with 100% accuracy. But what I do know, is that Football just keeps getting better and better. "The Greatest Age" is found when you felt the way I did the first time I saw Zidane. It is found when you stay up until 3:00 a.m. to watch your favorite team compete halfway around the world. It is found when you pile in cars with your buddies and drive to Colorado to play a team you've never heard of, and then beat them in a shootout. It is found when you just finished winning a game with your best friends and you run off the field because USA is about to play, and then dog pile each other in front of the TV when Donovan scores at the last minute.  It is found when you can no longer watch those games with your buddies, but know they are miles away watching it too. "The Greatest Age" is the same at the kickoff of the World Cup Final, as it is at the kickoff to your child's first game. When Football is part of your life, you are always living in "The Greatest Age."

Welcome Duece

My man Clint "Deuce" Dempsey joined Tottenham Hotspur F.C. today, I am elated as a Spurs fan but feel weird about how little Clint is getting paid. He is worth so much more than what we offered for him, but he isn't after money, he is after Champions League. He is a hard-nosed no nonsense enforcer who just gets it done on the pitch. Been a favorite for a long time. Plus he's a Texan!

Completing a hat trick v Newcastle

Game winner v Italy in Genoa

Did I mention he moonlights as a rapper?

I can't believe it either dude, welcome to White Hart Lane

Tribute to Andrés

Today UEFA announced Andrés Iniesta as the best player in Europe over the past year. This has shocked much of the football world considering who he had to beat to win the award.

The nominees:

How it was won:

Andrés Iniesta is unlike any player I have ever seen. I had the privilege to watch him play in Dallas, TX almost a year ago. My seats were directly behind the goal, and I was able to observe his style from an angle completely different than what we are used to on television. He was incredible. He anticipated everything. Sometimes he will make a pass and I'll think, "What are you doing?" and then his teammate will appear perfectly and make me feel like an idiot for ever doubting his judgement. His ability to see the future on the pitch make him a football prophet.

Imagine what it would take to play on the same team as Lionel Messi and still find ways to have your name written in lights and thundered across the globe time after time. In no way is he in Messi's shadow. I know there is no competition for the spotlight in that locker room, but imagine how hard it is to claim certain titles and awards independent from the man who is the closest thing to football perfection.

Just a few of his astounding accomplishments:

-Won a Major Continental Tournament
-Won the World Cup
-World Cup All-Star Team
-Man of the Match World Cup Final
-Winning goal World Cup Final
-Repeat said Major Continental Tournament
-Man of the Match in Major Continental Final
-MVP of Major Continental Tournament

Interesting to note that Lionel Messi has experienced 0 of the above!

Ronaldo vs. Messi

I'm tired of this debate. It really shouldn't even be one. It is time to put it to rest.

First let's talk about an argument and what makes it strong.

1.) Objectivity - Get your feelings and opinions out of here. Facts are irrefutable and can't lie.
2.) Level Playing Field - Both players deserve the best chance to show what they got.
3.) Credibility - Sound sources

To determine which player is better, I decided to examine the majority of their club careers starting when Ronaldo made his transfer to La Liga, July 1st 2009. Comparing statistics between the English Premiere League and La Liga simply would not transcend equitably. However we will venture beyond this time frame to determine superiority at the international stage.

Here we go-

The Objective Verdict

Lionel Messi is superior to Cristiano Ronaldo.
In an unbiased, statistical breakdown of both of their careers, the race isn't even close. Messi scores more goals and has more assists than Ronaldo for both Club and Country. He has 17 more prestigious awards, and 8 more trophies and yet is 2+ years younger.

Sorry buddy...

Subjective Arguments
(Because I can already hear your complaints...)

Myth No. 1: "Ronaldo does more for Portugal, Messi hasn't done anything for Argentina!"

              - Niether have lifted Silverware in any major tournament for their country. Ronaldo has been criticized numerous times for petulantly getting frustrated and impatient with his team mates. He is known to throw fits when those around him make mistakes. He has left the pitch without thanking the fans or shaking hands with his opponents. All this while being Portugal's Captain.

Ronaldo has played in the exact same position for Portugal as he does now for Real Madrid and previously for Manchester United. Messi on the other hand is able to change roles for Argentina. At Barcelona he plays as a central striker flanked by two wingers. For Argentina however he usually plays on the wing while Tevez, Higuain, Aguero, etc. play up front. Occasionally he will also play as an attacking midfielder as a playmaker behind any formation of strikers. The 3 strikers mentioned can't play any other position, and neither can Ronaldo, while Messi can adapt and help Argentina in more way than one. This supports the decrease in goal production (which is still higher than CR7) while maintaining a comparable assists per game ratio, roughly, to what he gets for Barcelona.

How can Ronaldo be doing more for his country is he scores less goals, registers less assists, and can only play in 1 position?

Myth No. 2: "Ronaldo is a more complete player; taller, faster, stronger, etc. He can score with more than just his left foot"
                    - Your subjective definition of "complete" has nothing to do with the objective definition of "results." He might be able to bench press more, he might be able to jump higher, and he might beat Messi in a 100 yard dash, but this isn't the Olympics. Messi scores more goals with his 1 foot than Ronaldo with 2 and his head. Great athletes use what they have been given. When you realize his step overs are getting him nowhere, then we can agree that flare doesn't equal production.
It must be noted that Lionel suffers from Growth Hormone Deficiency, which no longer makes the playing field level, yet he still out-performs Cristiano.
Who's taller again?

Myth No. 3: "Ronaldo is more entertaining, his goals are cooler. Messi is predictable"

-If this is really your rationale, then the Harlem Globe Trotters are the best basketball team on earth. Goals are goals. If Messi is so predictable, why haven't the defenders across the world figured him out? If you are still not convinced, please read my "Parable of the Boxer" under the Pele vs. Messi post.

Notice how Nani totally predicts what will happen next. This is Champions League Final mind you.

Myth No. 4: "Ronaldo is better than Messi right now because he won La Liga"

-Ricardo Carvalho also won La Liga, does that make him better than Messi? So did Fabio Coentrao, and Raul Albiol, and Alvaro Arbeloa, are they too the best players in the world?

Winning La Liga happens every single year, no 1 person is responsible, it is a team award and is therefore divided among the team. What isn't a team award, and what doesn't happen every single year, is Messi setting the world record for most goals scored in Europe in 1 year. If you think that Ronaldo is better based on this statistic alone, then you  believe destroying the single season goal record that has been around for years is easier than winning La Liga (team award) with the current Madrid squad. That's just plain silly.

Myth No. 5: "Messi plays with Iniesta and Xavi. They do all the work and set him up to score."

Who assisted this goal?

Here are the Assist Leaders from the past 3 years (No Messi or Ronaldo stats included):

- 2009/10
Barcelona: Xavi (14) Alves (10) Ibrahimovic (7) Iniesta (5) = 36
Real Madrid: Guti (9) Marcelo (9) Van der Vaart (7) Kaka (7) Alonso (5) = 37

Real Madrid +1

-2010/11
Barcelona: Alves (15) Xavi (7) Pedro (7) NO INIESTA = 29
Real Madrid: Ozil (17) Di Maria (11) Alonso (6) Higuain (6) = 40

Real Madrid +11

-2011/12
Barcelona: Alves (11) Iniesta (9) Fabregas (8) NO XAVI = 28 (THE YEAR MESSI SCORED 50)
Real Madrid: Ozil (17) Di Maria (15) Alonso (9) Xavi (7) Kaka (7) Benzema (7) Kaka (7) = 69

Real Madrid +41

The numbers speak very loudly for themselves.

Myth No. 6: "Ronaldo has the 'clutch gene.' He scores more goals in high pressure situations."

-Let's look at the most recent tournaments for each player:
2012 Euro - Ronaldo chose to go last in a shoot out. Never got to shoot.
2011 Copa America - Messi shot first and converted.

Ronaldo doesn't understand "high pressure."
He wanted to create it by shooting 5th, Messi wanted to diffuse it by scoring 1st.
He is obsessed with the spotlight that comes with "saving the day."

Not only have we seen him blast shots from outrageous angles and ambitions distances, but he does so while "inferior" teammates are in better position.

Even more statistics to prove Messi scores in bigger games versus tougher opponents..........

Here are the results of each player against teams 3,4,5 from the past 3 seasons in La Liga:

Ronaldo AND Casillas? Wow...

A list of some of Messi's World Records:

Dear Ronaldo Lovers,

It's been a long day for you. Let's recap...
-CR7 has a better supporting cast at Real Madrid
-He is bigger, faster, and stronger
-He is coached by Jose Mourinho
-He gets paid more
-He doesn't have Human Growth Hormone Deficiency

So how can someone who doesn't have all this, still put up better results for both Club and Country???

"But I'm still the coolest!"
Ask yourself, "What are my criterion for 'best player in the world?'"
 -Wins?
-Goals?
-Assists?
-Trophies?
-Titles?
-Game Winners?
-Performs under high pressure?

Lionel Messi leads in all categories. Ronaldo has no relevant statistic that overcomes La Pulga's dominance. Surrender your pride. You're arguments have been exhausted. He will forever be in Messi's 5'7" shadow.

My purpose isn't to get you to like Messi and dislike Ronaldo. You can love or hate whoever as much as you want. That is not what this is about. This is about facts and respecting the best in the world by setting aside opinions and recognizing who he is.

Your opinions are a byproduct of today's Sports Journalism. All the articles you read online and commentators you hear during games are trying to keep this debate open. The Media needs a juicy rivalry to keep you reading and watching, so they constantly attempt to keep this race close when in reality Lionel Messi is overwhelmingly the best in the world.

Final thoughts-

Now that we can let the dust settle and see the truth, let's enjoy the Golden Age of Football we live in. There has never been 2 such dominant players that have simultaneously hit their prime in all the history of all the world. We won't see anything like this for the rest of our lives, and our children will be jealous of the fact that we got to watch El Clasico's that featured Ronaldo v Messi.

*Be advised; This is between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi only. Don't bring up Pele, Maradona, Zidane, Ronaldo, or anyone else.
